England have won EURO 2022 after an extra time victory against Germany, fifty years after England played their first international.
It was the first time that Germany’s women have ever lost a final after winning eight of their 9 contested finals.
87,192 fans were at Wembley to watch the Lionesses defeat Germany 2-1 in a record attendance for any UEFA Competition.
A smooth chip from Ella Toone of Manchester United put the Lionesses a goal up in the 62nd minute but Lina Magull equalised 17 minutes later to take the game to extra time.
For some time, it looked as if the match would be going to penalties, but in the 111th minute, Chloe Kelly of Manchester City scored her first ever international goal when she tapped in from close range following Germany’s failure to clear a corner.
Chloe Kelly said: “Oh my god, look at them! It’s amazing, honestly, thank you every single person out there who supported us. This is unreal!”
Kelly then joined in with the celebrations, as Sweet Caroline rang out around Wembley. Returning she said: “This is amazing, this is what dreams are made of. As a young girl watching women’s football, this is unbelievable.”
Sarina Wiegman added: “We won the cup, it’s incredible!”
Sarina Wiegman’s team have become the first England’s women’s team to take a trophy at a major tournament after winning every single game in the tournament. There are now hopes that the men’s team can follow up on the Lionesses’ success in Qatar in five months’ time.
